“Durian Non” (Durian from
Nonthaburi province) is a local type of fruit that is especially profitable
for growers. There is even a saying about Durian Non: “Those who buy
Durian Non don’t eat it, and those who eat it don’t buy it,” because
Durian Non is so highly regarded that it is often offered as a gift
to respected persons. Durian Non are in such high demand that purchase
reservations have to be made even before the durian first blossoms each
season. The taste is sweet and mellow. It is delicate and soft, but
not mushy. The smell is not very strong and the color is appetizing.

Nowadays, Durian Nont orchards are mostly
only found in memories as the result of a range of problems. The most
significant problem is flooding, which has inundated durian orchards
in every part of the province. Perhaps a hundred varieties of durian
have been very nearly wiped out, leaving only a few economically viable
durian strains. Aside from floods, durian orchards are threatened by
environmental problems such as wastewater runoff and air pollution.
But the greatest cause for the inability of Nonthaburi’s durian orchards
to recover their formerly plentiful status is the expansion of numerous
housing estates that take land from the orchards bit by bit. The Durian
Nont Conservation Club must work together to preserve this emblematic
agricultural heritage of Nonthaburi province so that it can continue
to be one of the unique attractions of Nonthaburi province
