ปัญหาการใช้คำ although, even though และ though

 

                ผู้เขียนหลายคนเมื่อใช้คำว่า although หรือ even though มักจะใส่คำ but  ด้วย ซึ่งที่ถูกต้องแล้ว ต้องไม่ใช้ but ในกรณีนี้  ขอให้ศึกษาประโยคต่อไปนี้

(1)           û  Although she enjoyed her new job, but she would like to have a wider range of experience.

          ü Although she enjoyed her new job, she would like to have a wider range of experience.

 

(2)           û  Though it is said that the population will explode, but we can use science and technology to stop this explosion.

          ü Though it is said that the population will explode, we can use science and technology to stop this explosion.

 

(3)           û  Even though he wants to go to the U.S.A., but he hasn’t had the opportunity.

          ü Even though he wants to go to the U.S.A., he hasn’t had the opportunity.

 

เหตุผลที่ใส่คำ but ในประโยคประเภทนี้ คงมาจากอิทธิพลของภาษาไทยซึ่งจะใช้คำ “แต่” จะได้เห็นชัดเมื่อเปรียบเทียบประโยคภาษาอังกฤษกับภาษาไทย

ถึงแม้ว่า                                    เขา                        อยาก           จะ         ไป        สหรัฐอเมริกา

Although/Even though           he                         wants         to         go        U.S.A.

 

แต่                    เขา                   ก็                           ยัง               ไม่        มี          โอกาส

but                   he        (adverb-auxiliary)            still              not       have    opportunity

                                 ไม่มีคำแปลในภาษาอังกฤษ

                แต่ในกรณีที่ใช้ although, even though หรือ though ภาษาอังกฤษจะไม่ใช้คำ but

 

 

การใช้ even ในที่ซึ่งควรใช้ even though

                ปัญหาอีกอย่างหนึ่งในการใช้ประโยคที่มีความหมายในทำนองเดียวกันนี้คือ บางคนเข้าใจผิดว่าใช้เพียงคำ even ได้ด้วย จึงเขียนประโยคดังนี้

(4)       û  Even he is not interested in classical music, but he still went to the concert.

          ü Even though (although/though) he is not interested in classical music, he still went to the concert.

 

(5)           û   Even she had good grades but she didn’t get the job.

          ü Even though (although/though) she had good grades, she didn’t get the job.

 

                ปัญหานี้เกิดขึ้นเพราะผู้เขียนเข้าใจว่า ใช้คำว่า even แทน although, though และ even though ได้ ซึ่งที่จริงแล้วเป็นเรื่องที่ไม่สามารถทำได้ คำ although, though และ even though ใช้ในกรณีที่มีความหมาย “ถึงแม้ว่า” ในภาษาไทย ส่วนคำ even ใช้ในกรณีที่มีความหมาย “แม้แต่” ในภาษาไทยดังในประโยคต่อไปนี้

(6)           û  Everyone went to the dance, even Sally.

                      ทุกคนไปเต้นรำ แม้แต่ sally

 

(7)           ü Even his enemies agreed that Sam was honest.

                  แม้แต่ศัตรูก็เห็นพ้องต้องกันว่า Sam ซื่อสัตย์
