9.1 Combining Simple Sentences to Make Compound Sentences
compound sentence หรือประโยคประสม คือประโยคที่ประกอบด้วยประโยคย่อยอิสระ (independent clause) ซึ่งเป็นประโยคความเดียว (simple sentence) ที่มีความหมายเกี่ยวข้องสัมพันธ์กันตั้งแต่ 2 ประโยคขึ้นไป รวมกันเป็นประโยคเดียวโดยในการเชื่อมความ อาจใช้ (1) เครื่องหมายอัฒภาค หรือ semi-colon (;) (2) คำสันธานประเภท coordinating conjunction ซึ่งเป็นคำสันธานที่ใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่สมบูรณ์สองประโยคเข้าด้วยกัน หรือ (3) คำกริยาวิเศษณ์ที่ใช้ในการเชื่อมความ (conjunctive adverb) ดังตัวอย่าง

| compound sentence: | (1) Laura works forty hours a week; she goes to school at night. | |
| (2) Laura works forty hours a week, and she goes to school at night. | ||
