9.2 Avoiding Comma Splices and Run-on Sentence
ปัญหาทางไวยากรณ์ที่มักพบบ่อยและจำเป็นอย่างยิ่งที่จะต้องหลีกเลี่ยงในการแสดงความสัมพันธ์

9.2.1 Avoiding Comma Splices
comma splices (บางครั้งอาจเรียกกันว่า comma faults) หมายถึง การใช้ comma (,) เชื่อมประโยคย่อยอิสระสองประโยค จึงทำให้ผิดไวยากรณ์ ขอให้นักศึกษาพิจารณาประโยคที่เป็น comma splices ที่กำหนดให้ว่าจะสามารถแก้ไขให้ถูกต้องได้อย่างไร

Lila wants to be a full-time student, she has to work to support her family.
The apartment is great, I really like my new roommate.
My husband and I usually go to a party on Friday night, we go to the movies.
Bob wants to get a job as a programmer, he still has several courses to take.
นักศึกษาจะเห็นได้ว่าประโยคข้างต้นเป็นตัวอย่างของการรวมประโยคเป็น compound sentence ที่ไม่ถูกต้อง เพราะใช้เครื่องหมาย comma เชื่อมประโยคย่อยอิสระสองประโยคเข้าเป็นประโยคเดียว จึงทำให้ผิดไวยากรณ์ เรียกว่าเป็น comma splices ขอให้ศึกษาเปรียบเทียบระหว่างตัวอย่างประโยคที่ถูกต้องและไม่ถูกต้องต่อไปนี้

ข้อผิดพลาดด้าน comma splices นี้สามารถแก้ไขให้ถูกต้องได้หลายวิธีดังต่อไปนี้คือ
1) แยกประโยคหลักออกเป็นสองประโยคต่างหาก โดยจบประโยคแรกด้วยเครื่องหมาย full stop และเริ่มประโยคที่สองด้วยอักษรตัวพิมพ์ใหญ่ (capital letter)

2) ใช้เครื่องหมาย semi-colon (;) แทน comma

3) เติม coordinating conjunction หลัง comma

4) เติม conjunctive adverb
Bob wants to get a job as a programmer; however, he still has several courses to take.
