abbott mcneill whistler was born in lowell, massachusetts, on july
10, 1834. his father was major george washington whistler, and his
mother was anna mathilda mcneill whistler. when he was older, he
dropped the name abbott for his mothers scottish name. james --
or jimmie, as he was called -- was a delicate child, subject to
illnesses. when james was three years old, the family moved to stonington,
connecticut. major whistler, who had left the army, became an engineer
for the western railroad of massachusetts.
in 1841, tsar
nicholas I of russia sent his men to the united states to hire an
engineer to build a railroad from st. petersburg to moscow. the
position was offered to major whistler.
