14.2 Past Continuous
รูปกริยาของ past continuous was/were + V ing
14.2.1 ใช้แสดงเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ ณ ช่วงเวลาใดเวลาหนึ่งในอดีต
At 7.00 o’clock last night, I was watching Linping Highlight.
14.2.2 ใช้แสดงการบรรยายเหตุการณ์ของเรื่องที่จะเล่าต่อไป
While Nid was strolling along the flea market in Coventry Street in London, she met Roy.
(ขณะที่นิดกำลังเดินเล่นอยู่ในตลาดนัดที่โคเว็นทรี เธอได้พบรอย)
14.2.3 ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่ในขณะที่มีอีกเหตุการณ์หนึ่งเกิดขึ้นตามมา (past simple)
While Chan was cycling home last night, naughty boys threw stones at him.
(ขณะที่จันถีบจักรยานกลับบ้านเมื่อคืน เด็กที่ซุกซนปาก้อนหินใส่เขา)
What were you doing last night when I called you?
14.2.4 ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่กำลังดำเนินอยู่พร้อม ๆ กันในอดีต
I was cooking while the telephone was ringing.
Nida was knitting while her children were reading.
14.2.5 ใช้สำนวนในรูปคำกริยาของ past continuous เพื่อแสดงความสุภาพหรือไม่แน่ใจ
1) I was wondering if … (ไม่ทราบว่าจะ ... ได้ไหม) แสดงความสุภาพ
I was wondering if you could go over this report for me.
เมื่อใช้สำนวนเหล่านี้นำหน้าประโยค แทนการใช้รูปประโยคคำถาม (ในที่นี้เป็นการขอร้อง) ต้องเปลี่ยนรูปเป็นประโยคบอกเล่าคือ นำประธานไว้หน้าคำกริยา โดยใช้ if หรือ whether นำดังนี้
Could you go over this report for me?
I was wondering if you could go over this report for me.
2) I was thinking… (คิดว่า...) แสดงความไม่แน่ใจ
I was thinking maybe we should not join that club.
3) I was hoping (that) (หวังว่า…) แสดงความหวัง
I was hoping (that) Mr. White gave permission to use the limo.
