2.4 คำคุณศัพท์ (adjective)
คือ คำที่ใช้ขยาย บรรยาย หรือประกอบคำนาม หรือสรรพนามให้มีความหมายชัดเจนขึ้น คำคุณศัพท์สามารถอยู่ในตำแหน่งต่าง ๆ ได้ดังนี้
2.4.1 หน้าคำนาม เช่น
My favorite movie of all times is Gone with the Wind.
Dr. House attended an interesting conference in New York.
2.4.2 หลังคำกริยา BE และกริยาเชื่อมต่าง ๆ เช่น
Those flowers are beautiful and expensive.
Nina looks gorgeous in her wedding gown.
She felt excited when interviewing the Prime Minister.
2.4.3 หลังกรรม โดยทำหน้าที่เป็นส่วนเสริมกรรมซึ่งอาจเป็นคำนาม หรือสรรพนาม เช่น
His mother asked him to keep his room tidy.
Jo always makes me happy.
When you find someone special, your life will be complete.
2.4.4 หลังคำนาม ในกรณีที่มีมากกว่าหนึ่งคำ โดยมักมีเครื่องหมาย comma (,)
คั่นอยู่หน้าและหลังคำคุณศัพท์นั้น ๆ ด้วย เช่น
The house, small and cozy, belongs to Antonio and Melanie.
ขอให้สังเกตว่า คำคุณศัพท์จะไม่เปลี่ยนรูปไปตามคำนาม กล่าวคือ จะไม่เติม s ในกรณีที่ใช้ขยาย
คำนามพหูพจน์ เช่น
This is an easy question.
These are easy questions.
