                   2.1 thesis statement  เป็นการกำหนดลักษณะของบทความ ว่าจะเป็นบทความแบบให้ข้อมูล (informative) วิเคราะห์ (analysis) หรือเป็นประเด็นโต้แย้ง (argumentative)

ตัวอย่างที่ 1
We provide an overview of changes in policy and pedagogy over the last thirty years before describing our interview-based study and discussing the complex nature of strategy use which is revealed.

ตัวอย่างที่ 2
This article examines recent developments within the United Nations on the subject of business and human rights, focusing in particular on Ruggie’s work as the Secretary-General’s Special Representative, and reflects on a number of possible actions that could be taken in the future given the recent renewal of this mandate by the UN Human Rights Council.

ตัวอย่าง thesis statement  แบบโต้แย้ง
Thai teachers in the Thai educational system may be ‘non-native’ speakers of the language they teach, but they are ‘native’ in terms of their situational teaching competence –which is as much a part of their professional expertise as language competence (Shin and Kellogg, 2007).

                   2.2 การเขียน thesis statement ต้องจำกัดประเด็น อย่าให้กว้างเกินไป หรือเป็นข้อความที่ไม่สามารถโต้แย้งหรือแตกประเด็นได้

เช่น
Thai students do not prefer student-centered learning style. กว้างเกินไป
Learning styles are personal. ไม่สามารถแตกประเด็นได้

                    2.3 การเขียน thesis statement อาจกำหนดข้อกล่าวอ้าง (claim) และความต้องการของผู้เขียนว่าจะให้บทความนั้นท้าทายผู้อ่านระดับไหน

              Learning at a distance is a challenge.   Unambitious
              Learning at a distance needs self-discipline.  Moderately ambitious thesis
              Learning at a distance needs self-discipline trained while learning.     Most ambitious thesis

                   การกล่าวอ้างทำได้หลายแบบขึ้นกับจุดยืนในการเขียนบทความนั้น ๆ ความรู้ หัวข้อ ผู้อ่านและบริบท ผู้เขียนบทความพิจารณาใช้ให้เหมาะสม อาจอ้างความหมาย คำจำกัดความ  อ้างเหตุและผล   อ้างค่านิยม  อ้างทางเลือกหรือคุณค่า นโยบาย
